Thanks all who Supported the USS Wasco On Oct 2 2010 for NEF Fund over $2500

The National Emergency Fund has provided over $6,000,000 in direct financial assistance to Legion family members and posts. The National Emergency Fund has kept posts from closing and enabled Legion family members to begin to rebuild their homes and their lives.

The Pennsylvania American Legion Riders got behind our Department Commander Wasco and supported his project the NEF Fund.

There was a Benefit Run for the NEF will on October 2nd that started at 8:00 am.  The cost was only $10 per person.  We will visited many Posts including 910, 386, 998, 420, 26, 143, 730, and 733.  We returned to Department Headquarters around 1:00 pm.  We had an all American cookout including hamburgers, hot dogs and refreshments.

We support our Department Commander Pete Wasco’s project for the NEF and now show us what you can do to support the NEF fund.

Legion Riders from Chapter 733 Harrisburg ventured down to Birmingham Alabama to meet riders from Chapter 347.  The 804 miles was exciting and educational as the Riders President Charles Oakley saw how the other state runs their Legion Riders Program.  They departed Harrisburg at 4:00 am and arrived at Post 347 in Alabama at 7:00 pm.  The trip was so successful that next year Post 347 will be coming to visit our Riders organization here in Pennsylvania.

He will be missed by his Legion Riders Family

Post 517 Mercersburg, PA had a memorial ride for our past Commander that passed away  this year.  His dream was updating our Legion picnic grounds and he was able to finish a new food (beer) barn and it is a very nice building.  Garry wanted to do more but he was taken by our Lord.  Our riders asked if we could have a ride to raise money to make Garry’s dreams come true.  So that ride (the 1st annual) was on Sept19, 2010 and we raised $680.00!!!  The pict’s are taken from Garry’s final resting place.  We thought it would be nice to lay flowers at the grave before the ride.  Many of his family members were there. We are planning to do this ride every year and all money collected will be used for the picnic grounds in Garry memory.

It’s time to put your money where your mouth is.  And by “money” we mean “commitment” and by “mouth” we mean “mouth.”  Here’s the thing – too many riders are involved in too many crashes.  In 2009, there were 3,736 crashes, resulting in 204 fatalities in Pennsylvania.  That’s 3,736 and 204 too many.

Want to honor the fallen and keep those on two wheels on two wheels?  Then commit to being one less statistic.  To taking it easy.  On the roads, in the bars.l  Commit to Be One Less on the www.livefreeridealive.com website.

American Legion Chapter 56  from Lititz, PA and Chapter 185 from Mt. Joy PA teamed together Monday, September 13th to help American Legion Auxiliary Post 56 with their yearly Feed the Vets in the Park event.

Auxiliary Unit 56 provides a lunch in the Lititz Springs Park for Veterans from the Lebanon VA Hospital each year. The riders helped with the loading and unloading, the set-up and clean up. After the veterans had enough to eat, the riders also helped with an enjoyable bingo game.

It seemed the veterans  could not get enough of the cake, cup cakes and pies. The Auxiliary also provided homemade chicken corn soup, hot dogs with kraut, beans and macaroni salad. While the Riders were to keep the vets entertained with conversation it turns out the Riders were the ones entertained with the stories from the WWII, Korean War and Vietnam Veterans.  A great time was held by all.

It was an early Saturday morning on August 28, 2010.  Five men set out on a mission to Minerville, PA to deliver a lift chair to one Sargent Ronald Rushanan retired Vietnam Veteran.  The chair was generously donated by American Legion Post 665 in Dickson City, PA.

They set out on their mission and it went smoothly.  It wasn’t until the men met Mr. Rushanan that they realized how much he needed this chair.  It was then that they Riders realized how much the chair was appreciated.

In one act of kindness, they changed a mans view of the Riders and veterans groups.  Keep up the good work Post 665!  Special thanks goes out to Larry, Jerry, George and Tim for the time they spent delivering the chair and visiting with Mr. Rushanan.  The mission was a success!
